#FITspire of The Week: Sarah E. Evans is Living Fit ‘n Clean!
What gives someone the right to consider themselves a successful fitness model or personality in the industry? Is it the amount of covers one can land because of their physique? Could it be how many sponsors they are able to grab to help support them? Or is it the amount of money one can make between different modeling/ fitness gigs?
Everyone will tell you something different, but if there is one thing that is hard to disagree with, it’s the ability to promote and market yourself to others. Social media has begun to play a huge role in self marketing as an athlete, competitor, fitness model or personality in the Industry. These days, you don't need a modeling agency to help promote you, or a company to take you on as a sponsored athlete in order for you to be seen in the industry.
Someone who once could have been just an average fit person, now has the ability to transform themselves into a “Social Media Fitness Star!” If you put in the time, the effort, and truly have a passion for fitness, you can change yourself from just a face with a body, to a bona fide personality – someone able to inspire and motivate others on their own fitness journey!
Sarah E. Evans, age 27, and hailing from the great state of Texas, is proof that if you put in the time, effort, hard work in the gym AND the kitchen, and use social media as a tool to self-promote, you can turn your average health/fit lifestyle into a network that reaches out to endless amounts of people who want to take the time out to follow your journey.
Q: Tell me about your competitive history.
A: Looking to compete in 2014.
Q: When did you get started on your fitness career/journey? What made you want become more than just the average person living a healthy and fit lifestyle?
A: I decided to start my fitness journey in January of 2013. At the time I was four months post pregnancy with our third child. Being that all three children were C-sections, I had little hope of ever achieving abs or even having the body I do today. I had always heard that some woman would gain weight after breast feeding, while it never happened before it did the final go around. I gained roughly 16 pounds in just a couple of months. I am the type of person who loves to jump in and fully emerge myself into my hobby or goal. I wanted to do to this right and not "half- assed". Sorry for the language, but it's true! Also once I realized how many I could inspire or help to live a better healthier life just around me in local community, I knew I wanted to be more than average.
Q: Being that you have a loyal social media following, what is some advice that you would offer someone wanting to increase their popularity in the Fitness industry? What tip can you give someone to help them build their following as well?
A: Share what you have learned, what has and has not worked for you. I feel you have to be personal, meaning sharing things you thought you would not share or show anyone. Example: Your before images. Don't be afraid to comment on other posts, shout out and tag people you enjoy following in order to help build your following. Most importantly, be yourself. Show your quirkiness, yourself in your weak moments, and your triumphs.
Q: Do you consider this as your part/full time job or a hobby?
A: It started as a hobby, but honestly now it is a part/full time job. LOL My family picks on me for taking pictures of my meals before eating, or my countless selfies, but I truly feel it's sometimes those posts that give someone that little bit of added motivation to choose a healthier meal or to get up and go to the gym.
Q: There are many people that motivate and are inspired by you. How does that make you feel knowing that there are people who take the time to see what you are doing day to day?
A: It's really unbelievable. I never would have imaged that I would be inspiring others the way that I do, and that they would take the time to see what goes on in my day to day life. It's almost surreal, but flattering in the same sense and makes feel like I am doing or did something right in my fitness journey.
Q: How does it feel knowing that somewhere, you are actually helping someone by motivating them to achieve their personal goals, just by posting your personal life and achievements on social media?
A: Even though I do not personally know each and every one of my "followers," I feel like we are a big family or friends. It is AMAZING to know that somewhere I am helping someone get motivated to start their first day at the gym or skip the fast food meal to stay on track. It's really like having an accountability partner! I love hearing from others who have seen my story or follow and have had success because of my story. Definitely puts a smile on my face to know someone else is living fit and healthy because of a decision I made for myself.
Q: Is there anyone who has motivated or inspired you to become the person you are today?
A: Kelsey Byers is one who has inspired me. Being she is a girl not too far from home (here in Texas) I feel I can relate to her. While our home life is totally different, meaning I have three children and she is currently pregnant with her first, I feel she has inspired me to continue to follow my dreams and reach for the stars. I found her a year ago right before starting my journey to fit and found what "clean eating" was all about.
Q: How does your family feel about your lifestyle? What would you say to someone whose family does not support their lifestyle?
A: It's a rocky road. One day they understand and the next they think you are crazy. LOL For the most part everyone is very supportive in my family. I do get the comments from time to time like, "You don't need to lose any more weight" or "What can you eat?" I don't let the comments get to me, and that they shouldn't either. Your family just doesn't understand or get it yet. They will, just give them time. Nobody likes change and all of a sudden you have made a lifestyle change for the better and they are still used to the "old you." Don't sweat it! Use their comments as fuel to keep you motivated!
Q: Of all the social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), what do you think is the most effective to use in order to market yourself in this industry?
A: I have found Instagram to be the most effective in my experience. It's easier for me to share and upload while on the go, and being a busy mom, than on Facebook. I do have the two linked together to share my posts, though. Instagram is user friendly in being able to find and search hashtags to be able to find you.
Q: What is your diet like? Do you eat clean all year round?
A: I eat clean year around. During the holidays I had a few extra treats.
Meal 1: Eggwhite pancakes
Meal 2: Protein shake and rice cakes
Meal 3: Chicken, rice, and veggies and/or salad
Meal 4: Turkey, sweet potatoes, veggies and/or salad
Meal 5: Lean protein, complex carbs, and veggies and/or salad
Meal 6: Protein shake and rice cakes with peanut butter
Q: What is your favorite cheat meal? How do you control yourself from going overboard when you decide to treat yourself?
A: I am a sweet lover so enjoying frozen yogurt is one for sure and for something savory, Mexican food! Portion control is key. When getting your yogurt get only enough to enjoy not make yourself sick. Same with Mexican food, I usually still stay on the healthy side of the border and order things like fajitas and corn tortillas, enjoy a couple chips and salsa. Keep the water handy to keep you feeling full.
Q: Do you take any supplements? What do you think is one of the most important supplements someone should take who is training constantly?
A: For my supplements I use a women's multi vitamin, fish oil, and calcium. I also use Metabolic Nutrition for all my supplements. They have by far the best-tasting protein and it is easy to digest.
Protizyme (protein) Peanut Butter cookie is my Favorite!
TAG (glutamine and muscle recovery) Fruit punch
TRI-PEP (BCAA) Lemonade
I feel it's important to take a good multi vitamin and protein for someone who is training constantly.
