"My big picture goal is to produce materials to inspire younger girls in their personal journey - whether it is to be fit, follow their dreams or just believe in themselves. I already have thousands of girl fans that are looking for inspirational role models and physiques that are strong, sexy and empowered - and these fans are very loyal! So I hope to keep challenging the age stereotypes and increase my credibility as a spokesperson for being strong and staying young.”
It has been a year since I spoke to figure competitor and fitness model Belinda Benn and she shared the above goal. Now since Belinda is not the type to just wait and let things happen, she goes out there and makes things happen, I figured a return visit was well overdue. So let’s see what has been happening in ‘Benn’s World’ since our last encounter…..
The last time we spoke you were heavily involved in advanced nutritional strategies to enhance health and combat aging and now I see you have brought out your own nutrition program. Can you tell us more about this new enterprise of yours?
“The Get Lean Program is a 90 day, 3 phase fat burning transformation plan. My personal transformation at the age of 44 was so dramatic that people started asking, how did I do it? It wasn’t long before I realized there was a huge amount of practical, everyday information that needed sharing. I wanted to share what a lot of us know and take for granted within the industry, and make it easy to understand and follow.”
What gave you the idea to set it up?
“I couldn’t keep up with the emails from people wanting advice. People seemed to identify with my personal story and transformation. I thought to myself, there must be a better way to share what I have learned! So it made a lot of sense to start writing the Get Lean Program. Once I started, I realized there are many critical aspects to achieving a lean physique that needed to be explained in everyday language. Everyday, I became more and more inspired and at the end of 6 months of hard work, it was finished! Every ounce of effort I put in is now being rewarded by the emails I am getting back from people who are seeing their lives changed.”
There is a lot of competition out there in this market(e.g. Jillian Michaels, Jackie Warner and other professional competitors) what would you say makes your service stand out from the rest?
“Relationships are very important to me. The Get Lean Program comes with 12 weeks of personal follow-up support, including weekly emails and recipes. I love the fact that I can connect with every single person on the program, get to know them, listen to their stories and inspire and motivate them for success. The mental and emotional aspects of healthy eating, self-esteem and self-image are featured strongly because I know how powerful they are to getting real results. I also share how to develop your “Nutrition Intuition”, so over time you develop healthy eating habits for a lifetime. So to sum up, I believe my program stands out because you personally connect with me, the individual behind the product and that I genuinely care about your success as total person, mind, emotions and body.”
Do you have a primary target audience?
“I did have a primary target audience but customers have told me differently! I launched Get Lean on July 26th and I already have men and women of all ages on the program. I assumed that women around my own age would be most interested, but the benefits of the Get Lean Program seem to have a wide appeal.”
What do you hope to achieve through this program?
“I found that so many people trying to lose weight or achieve their ideal physique get discouraged and give up. I want to give them renewed confidence, that they can do it, to know that the Get Lean Program will get results for them personally. Sometimes it just one little mental adjustment, that can mean the difference between success and failure. I know that first hand. My clients here in Panamá are already well into the program and I can’t wait to share their stories because I know it will inspire others that success is possible at any age.”
Elsewhere in your life, what have you been up to in the last few months?
“This year I started training a few special clients. Special because my time is limited, so I can only take a handful of people. Plus, because of my background working with the Japanese, I am very service orientated. Everyone gets very personalized attention. Every single workout is customized and even adjusted on the go depending on all the variables to get optimum results. I discovered I love training clients, and I am blown away by their results.”
Have you been keeping an eye on the latest contests over here and what are your thoughts on the new bikini division?
“Yes I always keep an eye on the competitions, especially on RX because you have almost real time coverage and extensive photo galleries. I think the new bikini division is excellent and although the judging has been somewhat controversial, I believe the top girls really deserve to be there and have put in just as much hard work as the figure competitors. My physique is probably best suited to this division so I find it inspirational to imagine maybe one day I will compete in it!”
That being said, do you have any plans to compete in the near future?
“How did I know you were going to ask that? My hands are full right now with my new program, writing projects and personal training – not to mention my own training, crikey! If all goes well, maybe next year.”
Do you still hold down your regular day job and if so is it your hope to be able to leave it behind and make your living solely from your fitness enterprises?
“This year I went full-time into fitness. It’s a challenge but between my training, writing, consulting and the Get Lean Program, I am doing it. As they say, starting is the hard part. So at least I am over that first hurdle and hopefully the best is yet to come. I believe that if you do what you love and use your head, you will be successful – and happy.”
Would you describe yourself as an entrepreneur?
“When I worked in the corporate world I always admired entrepreneurs. Now that I am standing in those shoes and it doesn’t look so glamorous! It takes a huge amount of self-belief, faith that you can do it, hard work and endurance. But it’s the people that make the difference – and I have some fantastic people around me, both online and in the real world, and they are a tremendous support….I have to thank them for that.”
What tips would you offer other women in the sport when it comes to actually making the sport a profitable vocation?
“This is a great question and one I asked myself everyday a couple of years ago when I first started being published. There are two ways to define profitable. First, you make more money from the sport than you spend on it. Second, you make enough money from it to support your lifestyle. To achieve either of those you need to find your strongest potentials and build on those. Think about what you enjoy doing and are good at. Try to think outside the square. Then look for people who are already successful in those areas and study them. What are they doing? How are they doing it? Contact them for advice. That’s what I did and I was amazed at what I learned and how much people were willing to help me. “
What long term goals do you have in terms of your career?
“Within the next couple of years I would love to compete onstage in the States and have to chance to meet everyone in person. I would also like to bring my story to a wider audience because I believe the time is right for the message of our industry – that people can look and feel great at any age. Without surgery, without fads or gimmicks – just a great diet, disciplined training program and healthy lifestyle. “
