weekend at the 2013 NPC Team Universe Championships. With an exceptional number of competitors, there was no shortage of competition. The figure division certainly didn’t disappoint.
With 6 height classes, the look of what the judges want can look different from class to class. The judges are judging what’s in front them and physiques appear different in each height class. Broad shoulders, a small waist, defined quads and a nice glute/hamstring tie in tend to be the winning features for a figure competitor. The winners of each height class were lean with well developed muscle yet exuded femininity.
Simone Maybin, a veteran on the figure stage, took home top honors with the Overall Figure win. She exemplifies the ideal figure physique with nice, capped shoulders, a tiny waist and tight glutes and hamstrings. Everything, from her suit to her hair and makeup were flawless. Her stage presentation was on point and in my eyes, was the clear winner of the figure division.
Another stand out in the figure group was Melissa Smith. Melissa took home 2 Overall wins in both the Master’s Over 35 group and the Master’s Over 40 group. Symmetry is a huge factor in the figure field and Melissa is very well balanced. Being able to go on stage and present your body beautifully takes practice and Melissa did just that. She also placed 2nd in her open height clas

The 2013 NPC Team Universe was an amazing show with top level athletes. The figure division had stacked classes and tons of talent. In a sport where the desire to keep progressing and the only limitations are set by the competitors themselves, it’s hard to say who will become the next top pro. One thing is for sure, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see one of the winners from this show quickly rise to the top! Keep an eye out!
