IFBB Figure Pro Essence Monet Rising Above and Onto the Pro Stage
If you don’t know me, allow me to introduce myself. I am Essence Monet and an IFBB Figure Pro. I am currently 6.5 weeks out from my pro debut at the 2012 Dallas Europa. I am over the moon excited… But before I tell you about where I am now, let me tell you how I got here.
STORYTIME!!! Go grab your snuggie and some egg whites and enjoy…
I was always an athlete and grew up running around outside, riding my bike and racing the boys in my neighborhood. I was heavily involved in athletics i.e. basketball, tennis, softball and even ice skating (yes, ice skating lol). But my love for running has always been at the top of the list and I soon became a dedicated track and field athlete. I ran track throughout all my years in school until I suffered a devastating injury to my knee during my freshman season in college, blowing out my ACL and tearing half of my meniscus. I wasn’t able to run quite the same after the injury and decided to hang up my track spikes for good. Needless to say, I was crushed, but little did I know that there was something greater waiting for me in the wings…
The one thing that people tell me is that I have a lot of confidence, but little do people know that I came up from a dark place in my life to get to where I am now….
During my freshman year of college, I became involved with someone and fell for them immediately. I was a naïve 19 year old at the time and this was my first real relationship. I have never condoned a man hitting a woman nor did I ever think that I would be that girl. But there I was crying because my boyfriend hit me. I never wanted to be in such a relationship nor did I want to stay in one such as this, but I did, because I stupidly thought that I could change him…. I was wrong. I ended up staying with him for almost 3 years and the abuse only got worse. During the last months of our relationship I started to fight back and fight for my way out of my situation.
After all was said and done, I was a very broken girl and had to re-build myself back up. In 2006 I started working at a gym and discovered a new form of therapy to heal the wounds. I started lifting and became enthralled with the results and the changes that my body was making. Shortly after I decided to start training for my first competition, Illinois State in 2008. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but figured it would be better than being fat and lazy. It was a true calling for me, as well as, a great way to get myself back to being an athlete. I was immediately hooked after my first competition and the rest is history. I got my pro card at my first national level show, IFBB North Americans, in 2011 and I am currently on Team Bombshelland prepping for my pro debut. It has been quite a journey so far and I can only see it getting better.
So, until next time… Stay Classy, Lift Heavy and Dare 2 Dream:)
