Monique Cormier, who has overcome obesity and severe depression en route to becoming a world class amateur bodybuilder, joins Dave [ ... ]
Spotlight On: Sabrina A. Taylor
Category you compete in: IFBB Figure Pro
Date of birth: March 30
Hometown: Military Brat: Born in Honolulu, HI. Next, South Carolina (yes once I had a southern accent), South America, Caracas, Venezuela (would go back in a minute!) , then ended childhood years in California. So you could say a gypsy, nomad... Military brat.
Career: Military was my life! To extent still is, I am the Manager of one out of 13 fitness centers located on Camp Pendleton as well as a Personal Trainer in my community.
If you could change into a superhero for a day who would you be and why?
With no hesitation: Aeon Flux!!! A tall, leather-clad secret agent, skilled in assassination and acrobatics and sexually charged! (can I say that?) Thigh high leather boots and still a bad ass who can walk on her hands. Yep, that's why.
What made you begin dedicating your lifestyle to this sport?
Life as an athlete began for me at age 5. Gymnastics is what I spent every day after school and on weekends doing. It was dedication that I learned back then that still surfaces for me now. In college the healthy lifestyle did get lost for a few years I have to admit, but I have never stopped with the acrobatics! After joining the USAF, stationed at my first duty station, you're basically stuck on base, gyms were free. I found my way back! I find such comfort, stress release and satisfaction training with weights. Stationed in England, I was approached and introduced to UK Figure, I haven't stopped since. Whether I'm training others just starting out or with my peers I couldn't see my lifestyle in any other way.
What approach do you take to dieting...carb cycle..keto?
Carb cycle. My moto: Dieting is the easy part; you just got to follow the plan! The hard work comes from within.
What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about competing?
There's a lot more to figure than just coming in your best or looking better than other competitors.
What is your most embarassing childhood memory?
2nd grade, in class with my favorite dress on "Miss Teacher I have to go to the bathroom". Teacher, "No Sabrina you have to wait." I asked 3 times before... just couldn't hold it and peed in my dress! I did get to go home though.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned about YOURSELF during your contest prep? Even when faced with negative comments from people I may work with, some even friends, I have the capability to pursue something I believe in. Exercise definitely is a passion for me.
Who do you look up and admire and why?
My mom, really she has been hard and tender with me. She has shown me how to appreciate things and people for who they are and not for what they may have or possess. Most importantly continues to live a healthy lifestyle.
