What made you begin dedicating your lifestyle to this sport?
Fitness has always been a way of life for me. As a child and through my teens, I was a gymnast, cheerleader and diver. I thrived in competitive environments and love the conditioning and strengthening that those sports required. After college, I began a desk job as a research engineer and while I really enjoyed what I did, I missed the fitness aspect. My real dedication to this lifestyle came right after I gave birth to my son. My husband and I had worked hard and saved every extra dollar so that I could stay home with our son. Within a few months of having my son, I found out about fitness competitions. I remember watching ESPN and seeing the Fitness America shows, thinking, I can do that! I did a little research and found that there was a figure competition in my area and thought that would be a good place to start. The NPC Northern Kentucky was my first competition – 5 months to the day after my son’s birth. Much to my surprise, I won both my class and the overall. Since then, I have compete 25 times both in Figure and Fitness. I turned Pro in Fitness at the NPC Nationals in my second competitive year and am proud to say, that I have had the opportunity to compete on the world’s most presitgious stages – the Olympia and the Arnold Classic.
I have stepped away from the competitive stage myself and now work with women across the country and around the world that want to get to their personal best, regardless of their age. I am a leading expert in contest preparation, nutrition, supplementation & posing for Figure, Bikini & Fitness. I have AWAYS been a natural - drug free competitive athlete and I strive to teach women how to get and keep the body of their dreams in a safe and healthy way for the rest of their lives.
What approach do you take to dieting...carb cycle..keto?
I take a balanced approach to diet and have found that eating good, whole foods with a balance of protein, complex carbs and healthy fats in the right ratios allows women to get to their ideal body. Variety is key. Eating as many veggies as possible and constantly mixing up your protein sources keeps a clean diet from getting boring. Extreme diets equal extreme weight flucations and while it may get you tight for a show, you will rebound and gain back the weight you lost quickly post show… and kill your metabolism in the process. I never recommmend a nutrition plan below 1200 calories – ever. Not 2 weeks out from a show. My goal for every competitive client is that their metabolism is better AFTER their show than before.
What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about competing?
The worst misconception that I hear about competing is that women have to take illegal substances in order to be competitive. It is simply NOT TRUE. It may take longer and you may have to work harder to be a natural competitive athlete, but it is so worth it! The long term damage that is done by drugs is insane, especially for women! I will not work with someone that wants to take performance enhancing drugs. For those that think there is no other way, I am here to tell you, I competed in the world’s biggest shows – on the Olympia Stage – as a completely natural athlete. I work with National Competitors every day that take top honors WITHOUT drugs. And now, 4 years after my last show, I am within 3% bodyfat of my show body composition. It is a healthy lifestyle that makes the difference. NOT DRUGS.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned about YOURSELF during your contest prep?
How important a good schedule is for me and how much I need to be active.
Who do you look up and admire and why?
I especially admire the women that decide to take hold of their health and fitness and work hard to balance everything. Mom’s who not only take care of everyone else in the family, but also make the time to take care of themselves. When you feel great inside, you are a better mom, wife and woman for everyone else, and yourself!
