A Memorial Day Message from Rx Muscle!

memorial-day-shadow-soldierMemorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 31 in 2010). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service.  First  enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the Civil War); it was expanded after World War I. The holiday was formerly known as Decoration Day because on this day the gravestones of every American service man and woman are decorated with an American flag.  If you have ever been to Arlington National Cemetery in our nation' s capitol, seeing those thousands and thousands of miniature American flags waving in the breeze is a sight only eclipsed by the sheer number of monuments they adorn.

Water Fountain Hogs!

It is said that in any community only a few do the really crucial work.  In our world, that work takes place in the gym.  Not just any gym, mind you.  In fact, the word "gym" has been perverted over time into something dreadful.  Cavernous glass and chrome enclaves richly appointed with carpeting, decorative finishes, and optioned with such accouterments as juice bars, salons, child care, pilates studios, and spa services; sporting such names as Bally's, 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, Sports Club LA, Equinox, and the like, are not "gyms" even though they have a room with some free weights, weight machines and dumbbells.  These are not gyms; these are "health clubs."  Typically, bodybuilders - the aforementioned few in our community doing the crucial work -  do that work in a gym, not a health club.  As such, the work being done in a gym - a real gym - is pretty serious stuff. And, since serious people tend to be doing the serious stuff, a bit of etiquette needs to be employed by those fortunate enough to be doing their menial work alongside our more crucial work.

Lance Armstrong: Novitsky's Next Victim!

Oakley-Lance-Armstrong3Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong now has the pleasure of having not only the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) looking up his ass, but also the former IRS agent, turned FDA special agent, who was the lead investigator in the BALCO case, Jeff Novitzky.  In addition to USADA's investigation, Novitzky has focused the forces of the Food and Drug Administration's criminal investigations unit on Armstrong to look into whether or not he took performance enhancing drugs when he won cycling's most prestigious race.  Novitzky, who made a name for himself in the press spending tens of millions of dollars chasing Barry Bonds out of Cooperstown, became famous in the BALCO case which involved numerous top professional and Olympic athletes, many of whom went to jail, were discredited, or ended their careers.

Revolving Door Contractual Policy No Good For Bodybuilding!

The current stream of hot male bodybuilding talent running in and out of a certain bodybuilding magazine  these days reminds me of something you'd see at a brothel during a half price sale. I used to think that signing promising rising stars or top level veterans was a good idea, but now that this magazine's publisher has perverted the idea into something ego-driven, self-serving and greedy; my thoughts have changed.  The change of heart comes not from my very low opinion of him as a human being, but rather the detriment his actions have on the all male bodybuilding roster he continually shuffles based on the latest pair of glutes for which he has such a lascivious penchant.

Former Track Coach Trevor Graham Keeps the Balco Story Going. . .

Former track coach Trevor Graham is suing the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for $30 million. The suit filed in Federal court this week alleges that USADA permanently tarnished Graham's name when they accused him of providing performance enhancing drugs to the track athletes he coached. According to court documents, Graham says USADA "slandered my name for the whole world to see."
