Aaron Backstage With Jenna Walters
When Jenna Walters, 29, came on stage for her fitness routine Dave Palumbo first noticed her scar running the length of her abdomen, but her routine stood out far more than any scar! Jenna got her degree in dance at Michigan University, and took her passion for fitness and is now working in corporate wellness here in Chicago.
One of Jenna’s more interesting dance related job was being a performer on a cruise ship. Darielle and I went a cruise for her birthday, and while I didn’t enjoy the trip, I often wondered what it would be like to work on one. Jenna said she spent 6 months on the cruise ship and made friends she still keeps in contact with to this day. I asked her to describe the experience, and she said, “I had a crew cabin in the fourth level, and it was a very small area. We had to wear name tags in all passenger areas, and we always had to maintain professional behavior, as we represented the cruise line. As a performer, we had two or three shows in the evening, and we also hosted the local night club afterwards. We also did crowd control for the excursions… So we didn’t just preform, we were very involved in the whole cruise experience.”
It turns out the scar is from a surgery to remove a cyst when Jenna was still in college. She has a horrible pain in her midsection and when she saw a doctor they did a CAT scan and actually thought she had a cyst attached to her spleen. It was actually fortunate that the doctors started the incision at the belly button because it could have been much lower. It turned out that the cyst wasn’t robbing the blood supply of the spleen or the esophagus. They also did a biopsy on the removed cyst and luckily, it was benign.
Jenna said that the scar doesn’t bother her one bit, and she hopes people see it and think, “Anything is possible!”
