Monique Cormier, who has overcome obesity and severe depression en route to becoming a world class amateur bodybuilder, joins Dave [ ... ]
Category you compete in: NPC Figure/Bikini
Date of birth: July 31, 1984
Hometown: Sugar Land, Texas
Career: I am a fitness specialist for Club One Inc. which is a company contracted to do corporate fitness for Chevron Corp. We run and manage their fitness facility in addition to running employee wellness programs. I also do wellness consulting and personal training/nutrition plans privately.
Sports background: I was a gymnast early on, but swam competitively for at least 12 years until college. That's when I got more into just training for my health and fitness and to feel good about myself.
Why NPC: Honestly, NPC was the first organization that I had heard about. Every competitor I knew, or magazine I saw always referenced the NPC and IFBB so therefore I thought it was the best! I haven't done a lot of shows yet, but they have all been NPC, and I know it's what drives me and is where I want to succeed.
What do you like best about competing? I think the transformation one can take their body through is absolutely mind-blowing. I have not always been the most fit or athletic person around and I actually grew up being overweight. Knowing and actually seeing what I can do to my physique through hard work and discipline is the most amazing and fulfilling feeling imaginable. Looking in a mirror the week before a show and being like "WHOOOAA I didn't think that was possible!" makes all the chicken and green beans worth it! PLUS on top of that, having people e-mailing you to say you inspired them to do something good for themselves that day because you're doing something you love...well that's indescribable.
Competition history: Houston Pro/Am 2009: Figure A- 3rd and Bikini A- 2nd. NPC USAs 2010: Figure- 16th
Next competition: 2011 Branch Warren
Competitors you look up to: I follow tons of the IFBB girls, but Nicole Wilkins Lee, Heather Mae French (even though she's not competing right now) and Amanda Latona definitely stand out to me.
Favorite cheat food: Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting!!!
Favorite diet food: Cold tilapia. Yes, COLD! I know it sounds gross, but for some reason I thoroughly enjoy it :)

Words to live by: "When you're not training, he is...and when you race him, he will win..."
